Cabozantinib is not a chemotherapy drug; rather, it is a targeted therapy medication. It works by targeting specific enzymes that are typically closely associated with cancer growth, operating through a mechanism distinct from that of traditional chemotherapy drugs. Traditional chemotherapy drugs kill all cells undergoing division—including both healthy and cancerous cells.
Cabozantinib is used to treat patients with the following conditions:
1. Advanced renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
2. Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) in patients who have previously received treatment with sorafenib (Nexavar)
3. Certain types of differentiated thyroid cancer
4. Pancreatic and extra-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors
Cabozantinib is an oral tablet taken once daily. The medication is available in three different tablet strengths: 20 mg (round), 40 mg (triangular), and 60 mg (oval).
Cabozantinib belongs to a class of medications known as "multi-kinase inhibitors," which help to halt the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells.
