While taking Selumetinib, you should attend regular follow-up appointments and remain alert to potential risks such as pregnancy complications, cardiac issues, eye problems, diarrhea, skin conditions, muscle issues, bleeding disorders, and drug interactions.
Regular Follow-up Appointments Are Crucial
While taking Selumetinib, you must attend regular follow-up appointments so that your doctor can monitor the progression of your condition. This helps your doctor determine whether the medication is effective and decide whether you should continue taking it. Blood and urine tests will be required to monitor for any adverse effects.
Pregnancy Risks
Using this medication during pregnancy may harm the fetus. You should use effective methods of contraception to prevent pregnancy while taking Selumetinib and for at least one week after your last dose. Male patients with female partners of childbearing potential must also use effective contraception during treatment and for at least one week after their last dose. If you suspect that you have become pregnant while taking this medication, please inform your doctor immediately.
Cardiac Issues
Selumetinib may cause heart problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest tightness or pain, dizziness or fainting, a rapid/irregular/pounding heartbeat, swelling in your feet or lower legs, difficulty breathing, or unusual fatigue or weakness.
Eye Problems
If you experience eye pain or changes in vision while taking Selumetinib, seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms could be signs of serious eye conditions. Your doctor may recommend that you undergo an examination by an ophthalmologist.
Diarrhea
Selumetinib may cause diarrhea, which can sometimes be severe. Do not take any anti-diarrheal medications without first consulting your doctor. If you have questions regarding this, or if mild diarrhea persists or worsens, please consult your doctor.
Skin Problems
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a severe rash, acne, or if you experience redness, swelling, peeling, or tenderness in your hands or feet. These symptoms may indicate serious skin conditions. Muscle Problems (Rhabdomyolysis)
If you experience dark-colored urine, fever, muscle cramps, muscle pain or stiffness, or unusual tiredness or weakness, contact your doctor immediately. These may be symptoms of a serious muscle problem (known as rhabdomyolysis), which can lead to kidney problems.
Bleeding Problems
Selumetinib may cause bleeding problems. Inform your doctor if you experience bleeding gums, coughing up blood, difficulty breathing or swallowing, dizziness, headache, increased menstrual flow or unusual vaginal bleeding, nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from cuts, red or dark brown urine, or red/black tarry stools.
Drug Interactions
Do not take other medications—including prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, herbal remedies (such as St. John's wort), or vitamin supplements—while taking selumetinib, unless you have discussed them with your doctor.
