September 24, 2024 - Vientiane, Laos - Recently, BigBear Pharma Laos announced that it has received official permission from the Lao Ministry of Health to export its anticancer drug Mitotane (trade name MITODX) to Malaysia for the first time, achieving a "zero" breakthrough for the Lao pharmaceutical industry!
Mitotane was launched in 1960 and has long passed its patent period. Due to its orphan drug nature, few pharmaceutical companies are willing to manufacture this product. This time, with the help of its international market sales and promotion service provider RxLibra, BigBear Pharma Laos has achieved a double "zero" breakthrough for the Lao pharmaceutical industry!
Lao Pharmaceutical Industry Exports Anticancer Drug + Orphan Drug for the First Time
The successful entry of MITODX into the international market marks the recognition of BigBear Pharma Laos by international market customers, and also signifies that the Lao pharmaceutical industry has improved quality and efficiency, reaching a new level. The export approval and successful trade completion by BigBear Pharma Laos means that the drug also brings new treatment options for ASEAN patients.

About MITODX (Mitotane)
MITODX (Mitotane) is an adrenocortical inhibitor that inhibits the production of corticosteroid hormones by the adrenal cortex. Studies on the mechanism of action of Mitotane have revealed two main biological effects: first, through mitochondrial alterations and inhibition of sterol O-acyltransferase 1 (SOAT1) activity, Mitotane exerts direct cytotoxic effects on adrenocortical cells; second, it inhibits corticosteroid synthesis by altering the peripheral metabolism of cortisol and directly suppressing the secretion of corticosteroids by the adrenal cortex.
Mitotane is used to treat adrenocortical carcinoma. However, due to the very small number of patients with this disease, it is sold as an orphan drug for the treatment of adrenocortical carcinoma. This drug is also sometimes used to treat Cushing's syndrome.
About Orphan Drug
"Orphan drugs" are also known as rare disease drugs, used for the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of rare diseases. Due to the small number of patients with rare diseases, low market demand, and high R&D costs, few pharmaceutical companies focus on the development of treatments for these diseases, hence these drugs are vividly called "orphan drugs".
